Because the address provided doesn't take you to anything that looks remotely close to a watch store, or a camera store that sells watches, as it were.
It takes you to an eight story church. I walked past this church three times wondering what I had done wrong. I thought perhaps Lemon might share an entrance so I walked into the doors and saw this:. Walking past what was very clearly a religious display of some sort, I thought I would at least go as far as the elevator before abandoning this endeavor. When I got to the elevator doors and saw this, I had all but given up on finding Lemon.
I retreated towards the door from whence i came and looked at this directory. The script next to 8F seemed to resemble what I had seen on Lemon's website, so I figured I would hop on the elevator and either disrupt Thursday night services, or find exactly what i was looking for.
When the doors opened, I saw this and realized I was in the right place. Once inside, I saw a case in the back corner that appeared to just dozens of old watches on display. Within the first 30 seconds, I saw the exact watch I had seen in the Seiko Musuem earlier today I asked them to pull it out, and I simply could not believe all the documents that this watch still had. It was the original gold-plated Grand Seiko from , with every accessory you could possibly imagine.
This included inner and outer boxes, original booklet, tags, strap, buckle, and even the hand-written timing results certificate! The package was an absolute dream, and although the dial had some aging to it upon further research almost all early GS watches have some markings on the dial , I just had to have it. A price I would have been happy to pay. And then I realized I had forgotten a zero. Now, I've been around the block once or twice, horologically speaking, and I knew this was just way too much money for this watch, even with all the box and papers.
So I tried reasoning with them. They wouldn't move. I eventually ended up speaking with Takayuki Suzuki, Lemon's owner and he explained to me that the watch was in fact consigned from a very large customer and he knew the price was high, but could not lower it. This is, in fact, a fairly common practice by vintage dealers - so rather than plead my case, I said goodbye to the watch.
My disappointment over not being able to buy the ultimate vintage Grand Seiko while in Tokyo was quickly forgotten when I began to really pay attention to what was around me. Three cases of just incredible vintage watches, of all shapes and sizes. And finally Lemon stocks what is without a doubt, the most impressive range of high-end vintage cameras and accessories I have ever seen. The amount of historic Leica bodies and lenses was downright shocking.
Limited editions I had never seen, lenses that you simply can not find in the US were sitting by the dozens in display cases. I began to talk to Mr. Suzuki more about his shop, and his knowledge and passion for both watches and cameras was remarkable.
